Recognition by European Commission strengthens PEFC's position
The new PEFC RED III standards were approved by the PEFC General Assembly on 8 May. Earlier, the European Commission had already issued a positive technical assessment of these standards. This brings PEFC one step closer to official recognition as a voluntary scheme under the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED III).

With the updated certification system, companies can demonstrate that their forest biomass complies with the stricter sustainability requirements of RED III. This applies to organizations already certified under PEFC Chain of Custody, as well as to companies aiming to obtain both certificates simultaneously. The PEFC RED III certification is applicable worldwide and focuses on forest biomass, wood residues, waste, and lignocellulose-based fuels. The certificate also includes mandatory greenhouse gas reduction calculations, which can be based on either standard or actual values.
Extension of existing scheme
The new scheme is an extension of the previous PEFC RED II certification. Additional requirements and clarifications have been included to ensure a stronger and more consistent application of the directive. Thanks to the European Commission's positive assessment, PEFC remains recognized during the transition from RED II to RED III.
