Greenery integrated into façades and roofs of post-war housing

Koninklijke VHG is participating in a large-scale study on nature-inclusive renovation of post-war housing. These homes are often poorly insulated and lack sustainability. The Building Skin RE-NATURISED project explores how greenery can contribute to future-proof renovation.

In the study, knowledge institutions, companies and industry organisations are working together on new solutions for the building envelope. The focus is on integrating living nature, such as green façades and roofs. These applications are intended not only to support biodiversity, but also to improve energy performance, water management and indoor climate.

Practical testing in a living lab

The researchers are taking a broad approach, combining design, material development and practical experience. In a so-called living lab, new solutions are tested in real-life conditions. The project also examines how the effects of these measures can be made measurable.

From research to application

The project is set up as a multi-year programme. The results are expected to lead to concrete guidelines and pilot projects. These will provide designers, builders and policymakers with tools to apply nature-inclusive renovation in existing housing.

New role for green professionals

For municipalities and green contractors, this type of renovation project may offer new opportunities. Greenery becomes an explicit part of the construction task, bringing green professionals into the process at an earlier stage.
According to the initiators, the role is shifting from contractor to full partner in renovation projects. This requires collaboration with other parties in the construction chain, but can also strengthen the position of green in urban renewal.
