Flower Designer App by JUB Holland

When presenting their designs, garden designers, landscapers, and horticulturists often face the challenge of convincing clients of their vision. A good explanation, attractive drawings, and reference images help, but even then, it can be difficult for the client to truly imagine the end result—especially when spring-flowering bulbs are being used extensively in the design. JUB Holland has developed a helpful tool for this: the Flower Designer App.

With the Flower Designer App, JUB can show clients exactly what an area in a park, roadside verge, or garden will look like when the planted spring bulbs are in full bloom. JUB Holland director Robbert Uittenbogaard explains how the app works: "The app includes many of our spring-flowering bulbs and standard flower mixtures. The Flower Designer App is constantly being updated, with new species and mixtures added regularly. If the desired species or mixture isn't available in the app yet, we can add it upon request."

"If we have photos of the existing situation, we can use the app to project the desired spring bulbs—already in bloom—into the area. A preview of spring! We can virtually create different combinations, remove or add varieties, and adjust the density, or number of bulbs per square meter. Because it's based on the actual project site, the result is immediately clear. Reference images become unnecessary."

Site Visit

But before the Flower Designer App comes into play, there's already quite a bit of preparation, Uittenbogaard emphasizes. "When we receive a request to include flower bulbs in a project, we almost always visit the site first. That allows us to assess the growing conditions, which affect which bulb varieties can be used. We check the soil type and surroundings, and of course, we ask about the client's wishes." He notes that demand has increased in recent years for naturalizing bulbs, as well as for bulbs that promote biodiversity. And in these times of climate change, more and more clients are asking for climate-resilient bulbs. "All of these topics come up in the preparation phase and together determine the best bulb selection."

"With the Flower Designer App, we can show how beautiful a blooming field of *stinzen* plants can look in a project."

Realistic Visualization

Next, JUB's specialists start designing the planting area. They select the most suitable species or standard mixtures. If desired, custom mixes can also be created—based on flowering time, biodiversity, height, or color. Using photos taken on site, the design is then brought to life using the Flower Designer App.
The app was developed specifically for use by JUB specialists and is not publicly available for download. "We want to stand behind the quality of our advice. That's why we keep the app's use largely in-house."

Special Bulbs

The visualisation tool is especially valuable when dealing with unusual bulbs or specific applications. Uittenbogaard explains: "If a park or natural garden design includes (native) *stinzen* bulbs, the client might not have a clear picture of what that will look like. Although these plants are becoming more popular, they're still relatively unknown."
*Stinzen* plants are naturalizing spring bulbs and tubers that thrive in parks and other (semi-)shaded, natural-looking areas. They're also excellent for biodiversity. "With the Flower Designer App, we can show clients how stunning a blooming field of *stinzen* bulbs can be in their project."

Specific Applications

The same applies to specific applications of flower bulbs. "Think of combining flower bulbs with perennials. If perennials are already present in the area, we can use a photo and virtually place the bulbs among them with the app."
He gives the example of ornamental onions (*Allium*) used in borders with perennials. "There are many different types, and most of them pair very well with perennials. With the app, we can show how a particular selection will look."

Upload Your Own Photo

"It's a fantastic visualisation tool when presenting to clients—not just for us, but also for garden designers, landscapers, and horticulturists," Uittenbogaard adds. And he has news for them: they can now upload a photo of the planting area directly via the JUB website (https://www.jubholland.nl/nl/landscape/service/flower-designer-app), choose a mixture, and have JUB create the visualisation. Within a short time, they'll receive the edited photo of the project area—ready to use in discussions with their client. Uittenbogaard: "Of course, they're also welcome to contact us directly to discuss the options."
