Products from Adezz and Schellevis create a luxurious and natural look
'The demand for green gardens is growing louder,' says designer Tom Poppelaars of Tuinstudio Tom. 'The stone era is over.' Tuinstudio Tom incorporated these principles into both the design and planting plan for a garden project in Boerdonk. A striking feature of the garden is the prairie planting, which Poppelaars composed himself.
In addition, corten steel elements from Adezz, concrete strips from Schellevis, and clay pavers from Wienerberger were used. Tom Poppelaars founded his own business in 2016, after having worked for thirteen years at Tuintechnisch Bureau Smeulders in Nuenen. "I started in the field, but after a few years I moved to an office role, focusing on planning and garden design," he explains. "I enjoyed it so much that I eventually decided to start my own company. The advantage is that you have more freedom and can organize your own time. The variety is also great; you're constantly working with different clients."
Construction handled by the client
For this project in Boerdonk, the client managed the garden's construction personally. "I then adjusted the design and planting plan accordingly," says Poppelaars. "At the client's request, we opted for prairie planting in both the front and back gardens. The use of lava granules helps prevent the soil from drying out, allows rainwater to drain quickly, and reduces weed growth."
Plant mix
Tuinstudio Tom selected a mix of perennials, which, according to Poppelaars, creates a natural effect. He designed various plant combinations and height levels to ensure year-round colour and interest. The front garden features a slightly playful character, while the back garden has a more structured design that ties in with the house. The backyard includes a pond, colourful plantings, and several tree species. Each section of the back garden has its own colour palette and planting height.
Local nursery
Poppelaars observes that more clients are asking for green, climate-adaptive gardens that allow for proper drainage. 'That naturally leads to stronger plant species that can withstand extreme weather conditions,' he adds. 'For this garden, I deliberately sourced the prairie plants from a local nursery.'
The raised corten steel borders in the front garden were purchased and customized by the homeowner. The individual elements were made to measure by Adezz, delivered in various heights, and installed on-site. Custom corten steel by Adezz was also used around the pond in the back garden. Additionally, Adezz planters were placed along the side of the house. The mailbox and wall lights on the rear garage wall are also Adezz custom work.
Natural appearance
'The quality of Adezz products is excellent,' says Poppelaars. 'Furthermore, Adezz always delivers very quickly. For my projects, I also regularly purchase fire bowls and water bowls from Adezz. The Adezz products give this garden in Boerdonk a luxurious touch.'
Poppelaars also deliberately chose the concrete strips (front garden) and tiles (back garden) from Schellevis. "The Schellevis products give both the front and back gardens a natural look. In addition, Schellevis products are extremely durable."
