Greentainer, LOLA Landscape Architecture and Donker Groep receive awards
Greentainer, LOLA Landscape Architecture and Donker Groep have won the Rooftop Awards 2026. The three winning projects show how roofs can be used for purposes including greening, water storage and biodiversity. The awards were presented on Friday 18 September during the Rooftop Festival & Symposium in Amsterdam.

In the Social category, the award went to Greentainer. The company developed a modular green roof for Liander transformer houses. According to the jury, the scalability of the concept is particularly interesting. Due to the expansion of the electricity grid, many new transformer houses will be added in the coming years. The system allows these small buildings to contribute to urban greening and biodiversity at the same time.

LOLA Landscape Architecture won in the Business category with the Zaanse Helden project in Zaandam. Together with Deltavormgroep, the firm designed a nature-inclusive and climate-resilient roof landscape. The roof contributes to water storage and reducing heat stress. The jury also considered the connection with existing habitats around the project. De Enk carried out the construction work.
The public award in the Private category went to Donker Groep for NICOYA in the Cartesius district of Utrecht. A green-blue roof park has been created here with private gardens and a shared courtyard garden. The roof provides space for water storage and is planted with, among other things, native species. Facilities have also been added for local wildlife, including hedgehogs.

Seven assessment criteria
The professional jury assessed the business and social entries on seven aspects: innovation and inspiration, circular and *biobased* material use, accessibility, sustainability and biodiversity, visibility, aesthetic value and combining different functions. The winner in the Private category was determined through a public vote.
The *Rooftop Awards* are an initiative of Stichting Rooftop Revolution and focus on projects that use Dutch roof space for purposes including greenery, climate adaptation and other urban functions.
