An exciting garden on 38 m2. Is that possible? This was the wish that designer Ellis Littooij of VIOLET garden design received for a modest southwest-facing backyard.

The design of the garden starts at 'the starting point', created as the ideal place for dining and lounging. The surrounding walls are clad with Prunus lucitanica and Ilex 'Caroline Upright', with one side of the garden featuring a raised corten steel border from ADEZZ, while the other side is level with the paving. In the center of the garden stands a 60 cm high planter, filled with Ilex balls and Calamagrostis, forming an evergreen, organic cloud. These tall, upright plumes not only provide privacy at the dining table but also preserve the view of the waterway and walking path behind the house.

A striking element in the corten steel border is the multi-stemmed Parrotia persica. This tree, which was carefully maneuvered through the house to be placed in the garden, can grow up to 250-300 meters high. The characteristic trunk, elegant leaves, and spectacular autumn colors make the Parrotia a favorite for smaller gardens. Under this tree, a variety of plants such as Diervilla splendens, Geranium, and the dark Ophiopogon create a varied color palette.

Such an ideal plant: Geranium macrorrhizum.

On the other side of the patio, a planting bed with Nandina and a jasmine against the wall offers a diversity of greenery. The garden cabinet, made of ayous wood, was custom built to fit into the design. The garden floor consists of light-colored ceramic 60x60 tiles that enhance the sense of space and contribute to an open appearance. For the right atmosphere in the evening, several strategically placed fixtures provide subtle lighting, completing the whole.
