Round White Planters Soften Straight Lines

Deco Tuinen aims to ensure a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. The landscaping company from Rijkevoort (North Brabant) recently designed a garden in Boxmeer that echoes the clean lines and angular forms of the client's newly built home. The garden also reflects the house's grey, beige, and black tones. As a playful contrast, Deco Tuinen added round white planters placed in front of rectangular corten steel panels, which can be illuminated at night with spotlights.

'The clients wanted the clean lines of the house reflected in the garden design. That's what we set out to do — to strengthen the connection between the house and garden,' explains Leon van Duijnhoven, who co-owns Deco Tuinen with Bernie Verheijen. The garden in Boxmeer belongs to a couple whose children have left home and who recently moved into a new house in a newly developed neighborhood.
'We got in touch because the husband works for a company where we had previously installed a garden,' Van Duijnhoven adds. 'He specifically wanted water-permeable paving, as water management in private gardens is becoming increasingly important due to climate change. We used pavers with gravel joints that allow rainwater to seep into the ground.'

Depth and Structure

To create depth and elevation in the garden, Deco Tuinen used rectangular corten steel planters from Adezz. Corten steel edging was also applied to separate the gravel from the soil. 'We've worked with Adezz from Uden for about ten years now. We continue to use their products because of their appearance, durability, and low maintenance. We also appreciate the variety and innovation they offer,' says Van Duijnhoven. 'However, Adezz products have become significantly more expensive over the years, which makes them too costly for some clients. That's unfortunate. For this reason, we don't use their custom-made products very often, as custom work is more expensive than standard products—though we understand that customization naturally comes at a higher cost.'

Seasonal Blooms

The white planters placed in front of the panels are 90 centimeters tall. Their round shapes soften the clean lines of the design and introduce a playful touch. 'The client selected these planters themselves.' Spotlights have been installed at the base of the corten steel panels to beautifully highlight the white planters at night. 'This creates a pleasant atmosphere, allowing clients to enjoy their summer evenings longer. The corten steel panels also serve as privacy screens and are visually striking against the fresh greenery.' Behind the panels, a hedge of Portuguese laurel has been planted, along with espalier trees for added vertical interest.

The planters contain flowering plants such as Salvia caradonna, Sesleria autumnalis, and Echinacea. 'Some bloom in summer, while others like autumnalis bloom into the fall. We deliberately chose plants with different blooming seasons so that the garden offers visual interest throughout the year.'

Certified Training Company

Deco Tuinen was founded on April 1, 2001, by Bernie Verheijen and Leon van Duijnhoven. 'We started out working from the garage and have since expanded to two spacious warehouses and a yard here in Rijkevoort,' says Verheijen. Like many landscaping companies, Deco Tuinen experienced a busy period during the pandemic. 'We completed a lot of projects and saw strong revenue growth. We didn't hire additional staff during that period because suitable candidates simply weren't available. Currently, we have ten employees and work with four independent contractors.'
Deco Tuinen is also a certified training company and has been mentoring interns for the past ten years. 'We continue to believe it's important to train the next generation,' says Van Duijnhoven.
