In the village of Wekerom near Ede, ten large lime trees have allegedly been poisoned, reports de Volkskrant. These trees will not survive. Following inspection, the municipality of Ede suspects that the trees were injected with a pesticide.
The trees, which were planted in 1960, show multiple boreholes that have not yet dried out. The damage is estimated at 100,000 euros by the municipality, which has now filed a police report. There are suspicions as to the motive behind the vandalism: people annoyed by falling leaves and bird droppings, shade on solar panels, or the sticky honeydew from aphids, which had also affected the trees in Wekerom. For this reason, the lime trees in the village were treated this spring with biological pesticides, which reduced the aphid population by 90 percent.
