When is a tractor considered old? There is no exact definition, of course, but an average age of 33 years is remarkably high in the editors' view. This is evident from new figures released by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

As of 1 January 2025, nearly 700,000 agricultural vehicles with a license plate were registered in the Netherlands. Of these, 303,000 are tractors. More than half of these tractors are thirty years or older. Thirteen percent are even over sixty years old.
In addition, the Netherlands has 256,000 agricultural trailers, with an average age of 25 years. The 122,000 mobile machines are significantly younger, with an average age of 14 years.
CBS does not define a specific age limit for an 'old' tractor, but the figures show that many vehicles last for decades. The editors find the average age of 33 years remarkable - that many years of service is quite rare in many other sectors.
