The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) warns about the Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica). Two dead beetles were recently found in Belgium. This insect is highly damaging to agriculture, tree nurseries, ornamental cultivation, and nature.
People do not need to fear these insects. The Japanese beetle is on the European Union (EU) list of quarantine organisms. This means that strict measures are in place to prevent its spread. The risk of the beetle spreading quickly is very high.
Beetles can hitchhike with road, train, or air traffic and thus cover large distances. After the discovery of the insects in Belgium, the NVWA calls for great vigilance. If you spot these insects, report them as soon as possible to the NVWA so that measures can be taken.
