With eWeeding Roller weeds stay away for four to six weeks

At a certain point, Wimmersson was approached by Loohorst Landscaping, which was working on rooftop gardens in Amersfoort and Arnhem and also wanted to try out the eWeeding Roller. 'It worked perfectly,' says Rik van Viegen, sales manager at Wimmersson. 'Despite the specific conditions on rooftop gardens.'

For example, the subsoil and weather influences at height are different from paving at street level, where the eWeeding Roller had been used until now. And what about a rooftop garden on a parking garage? That is always heated, which causes more weeds to grow. 'In general, it is the same type of weeds as on the street, but it starts growing earlier in the season and continues to grow a little longer. If you treat that with hot water, for example, it has nowhere near the effect of the eWeeding Roller.' According to Van Viegen, the weeds stay away for four to six weeks, comparable to the results on street paving.

The machine is lightweight - important for rooftop gardens, which are sensitive to subsidence.

No subsidence

'We did not have to adapt the machine for work in rooftop gardens. The only thing you sometimes have to take into account are the steel edges you see there. You have to work around those. The machine is particularly lightweight, also important for rooftop gardens. They are sensitive to subsidence, especially when work is carried out frequently.'

Case study: Avenue 1895, Arnhem

A recent application of the eWeeding Roller was in the courtyard garden of the residential complex Avenue 1895 in Arnhem. Van Viegen explains that this garden is located directly on top of a parking garage and is irrigated through an underground system. 'Underneath the paving and planting is a permeable lava layer. Due to the limited construction height and its location above a heated space, the temperature in the subsoil is relatively high. This creates a favorable growth climate - also for unwanted vegetation. Especially grasses come up through the paving.' But that turns out not to be a problem for the eWeeding Roller. It is also effective here in controlling growth, without modification of the machine or burden on the subsoil.
