Construction of the Netherlands' longest rooftop park faces major delays |

The construction of the Hofbogenpark — the longest rooftop park in Rotterdam and soon in the Netherlands — is facing at least a one-year delay. The municipality has ended its partnership with contractors Dura Vermeer and Van Dijk Maasland because their proposal failed to meet technical and financial requirements.
The two-kilometre-long park will be built on the former railway line of the Hofpleinlijn, six metres above the city. The design by De Urbanisten envisions a green route with space for biodiversity, recreation, and water collection and purification.
"It should be a celebration for both people and nature," says designer Mascha Onderwater. "A lot of attention has been paid to ecology. The planting plan is carefully composed to provide habitats for various species, such as bees, butterflies, toads, bats, birds, and hedgehogs. There will be special passages for small animals to move on and off the roof. We deliberately chose a less manicured look."

The park is intended to create a green link between four densely built-up Rotterdam neighbourhoods with limited outdoor space.

Construction to start by late 2026
According to alderman Pascal Lansink-Bastemeijer (VVD), the municipality will temporarily take over preparations before launching a new tender. "This way we can keep better control over quality, costs, and planning."
The budget for the Hofbogenpark, excluding the optional bridge over the A20, amounts to nearly 55 million euros. Due to the delay, construction is now expected to begin by late 2026. The park will eventually form a green corridor between four densely populated Rotterdam districts with little outdoor space.
