Rooftops on the Schiekadeblok will be connected with bridges, stairways and new rooftop gardens

Rotterdam's DakAkker is set to gain significant additional space in the coming years. The existing rooftop farm of approximately 1,000 m² on the Schieblock building at Schiekade will be expanded by 2,300 m² across neighbouring rooftops on Delftsestraat. This will create a new connected rooftop landscape in the centre of Rotterdam.

The expansion is part of the ROOFSCAPE project. The new rooftops will be connected to the existing DakAkker by bridges and stairways, as well as to a future rooftop garden on the Volkshotel building at the corner of Delftsestraat and Delftseplein. The development is being realised by several property owners, including the Municipality of Rotterdam.

The Schiekadeblok will not only gain more greenery, but will also provide additional space for recreation, food production and social interaction above street level

Production, social interaction and greening

The new rooftops will include small-scale rooftop gardens for residents and businesses. Vegetables, herbs and edible flowers can be grown and harvested there. A greenhouse is also planned, where workshops, meetings and dinners can be organised.
With the expansion, the Schiekadeblok will not only gain more greenery but will also create additional space for recreation, food production and social interaction above street level. The project aligns with the growing focus on multifunctional use of space in densely built urban areas.

Plans on display during Rotterdam Rooftop Days

Visitors can view the site and the plans during the Rotterdam Rooftop Days, which run until 7 June. Through the 'Walk The Block' rooftop route, twelve rooftops on the Schiekadeblok are accessible. Bridges, stairways and platforms connect the different buildings and provide an impression of the future rooftop landscape.
DakAkker is regarded as one of the best-known examples of urban rooftop food production in the Netherlands. With the expansion, the project will grow into one of Rotterdam's larger connected green rooftop landscapes.
