Supplier solutions in response to uncertainty surrounding regulations
The season for constructing and maintaining half-paved surfaces is approaching. For contractors and suppliers, this is a busy period. At the same time, another issue is at play: uncertainty surrounding the use of steel slag. This article provides an overview of available products.
Since July 2025, temporary regulations have been in force in the Netherlands. For certain applications on land, the use of steel slag has been prohibited. In other cases, a permit is required. Meanwhile, the government is conducting research into potential environmental and health risks. It is still unclear what future policy will look like. This creates challenges for companies. Work continues, but decision-making becomes more difficult when regulations change or are temporary. Do you continue with existing materials, or choose an alternative? That decision often has to be made quickly.
Differences depending on the situation
The regulations do not apply equally in every situation. It depends on the application and location. Clients also deal with the issue in different ways. Some are cautious, while others explore what is still possible within the regulations. This makes the work less predictable. The discussion around steel slag stems from concerns about potential impacts on water, soil and health. At the same time, the material remains part of policies focused on reuse and circularity. This tension is clearly noticeable in practice.
