Prototype fields from the Scale Up Future-Proof Artificial Turf programme were presented to municipalities from across the Netherlands on 10 and 17 June at Sportpark Van der Aart in Haarlem and Sportpark Ookmeer in Amsterdam. Monitoring of the innovative solutions will begin shortly. These solutions are designed to make artificial sports fields climate-adaptive, circular and capable of generating energy.

Municipal representatives visited the events to learn about innovations that could play a major role in climate adaptation, space utilisation, circularity and the energy transition. The prototype fields mark the first visible step in this process. More than 120 people attended the two afternoons combined.

Living laboratory

In collaboration with SRO, Amsterdam and Haarlem are providing the selected consortia GOO4iT, EnergieVeld and Antea Sport with a testing environment in which to experiment with innovative solutions. Over the coming year, the municipalities and independent research institute TNO will investigate the sustainability impact of the prototype fields. They will monitor performance and identify opportunities to optimise the innovations before applying them to full-scale artificial turf fields.

Antea Sport

The Antea Sport prototype focuses on testing innovative technologies that contribute to climate adaptation, water management and energy storage. The prototype integrates technologies such as controlled drainage systems, heat extraction and thermal storage, water buffers and circular materials, including shells combined with a mineral mix. This prototype field was presented in Amsterdam on 17 June.

EnergieVeld

The EnergieVeld prototype focuses on combining innovative systems that support climate adaptation, energy generation and smart water management. By testing different configurations, the consortium is exploring how artificial turf fields can become multifunctional while contributing to the programme's sustainability goals. The prototype combines technologies such as Climate Control and collector systems and uses circular materials. Together with partner ACE, the consortium is also developing a Digital Twin prototype for the construction of elevated sports fields. These prototype fields were officially opened in Amsterdam on 17 June.

GOO4iT

The GOO4iT prototype consists of the Urban Green Flow System (UGF System), an innovative concept that makes artificial turf fields multifunctional. The system combines water storage, cooling and energy generation through aquathermal technology. The aim is to create a comfortable and safe playing surface while contributing to climate adaptation, circularity and energy generation. This prototype field was opened in Haarlem on 10 June.

Scaling up successful innovations

Successful innovations developed within the Scale Up Future-Proof Artificial Turf programme will eventually be made scalable and transferable to other cities in the Netherlands and across Europe. Municipalities within the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area will in particular be able to make use of the framework agreement.

The programme is a collaboration between the municipalities of Amsterdam and Haarlem and SRO, with co-funding from the European Union's LIFE programme. By combining their purchasing power and using an innovation partnership, the municipalities challenge the participating consortia to test and scale up innovative and sustainable solutions.
