For municipalities and other public space managers, verges, green strips and watercourses play an important role as habitats and ecological corridors for plants and animals. According to Wallaard Groen, proper ecological management requires more than mowing alone. The choice of machinery, phased mowing and knowledge of ecological processes also determine the contribution to biodiversity. The Butterfly Conservation Netherlands developed Kleurkeur Blue together with Stichting Groenkeur. The certification is intended for organisations that manage watercourses according to defined ecological guidelines.
