Study shows difference compared with paved gardens
A green garden makes a clear difference during extreme heat. Among Dutch people with a predominantly green garden, 51 percent say it remains a pleasant place to spend time during extreme heat. Among those with a predominantly paved garden, this applies to just 22 percent.

This is according to the Climate-Conscious Living trend survey by Ipsos I&O, commissioned by Centraal Beheer. For the study, 1,037 Dutch people were surveyed in the third quarter of 2026.

Heat encourages people to add more greenery
The hot summer also appears to have influenced people's willingness to take action. Six in ten Dutch people are now considering measures to reduce heat in or around their homes. A year ago, this was still half.
Greenery is part of these plans. More than a third of Dutch people with an outdoor space intend to add more greenery. 19 percent want to add extra plants or flowers and 11 percent want to plant trees or shrubs. A further 7 percent plan to repla
