'Adezz edging adds a touch of class to the garden'

'My garden may be robust and must withstand playing children,' Arjan van de Pol told Steengoed! hoveniers during the first project meeting. He asked the Harderwijk-based landscaping company, which he knew from the many gardens they created at Villa Resort Harderwold, to also design and build his own garden in Barneveld. The plot measures 1,500 square meters and offered many possibilities. Steengoed! hoveniers installed, among other things, a unique staircase made of corten steel elements, white polyester planters, and corten steel edging from Adezz.

Robin Kroeze, garden designer at Harderwijk-based Steengoed! hoveniers, explained that a garden can have both an attractive appearance and a robust character. 'The two are not mutually exclusive. In the garden of the Van de Pol family in Barneveld, with its 1,500-square-meter plot, there was plenty of room for the children to play and exercise.' A soccer field was created. 'There's also a swing, which is a work of art in itself.' Further along, there is a swimming pool and a picnic table where the family can have breakfast. That was one of the family's wishes. This part of the garden also offers space for hosting parties, with cocktail tables arranged around an outdoor barbecue. 'One of the eye-catchers is a stone altar with Christian symbols, likely originating from a church. This heavy stone table was already in the garden when Van de Pol purchased the plot. The family did not want it removed but chose to repurpose it as part of the lounge area. The altar is so heavy that we had to move it with a crane.' The table fits beautifully here and enhances the garden's appeal. 'Arjan van de Pol has a clear vision, but when you, as a garden designer, present a solid plan, he's open to it. When we explained that it's absolutely possible to design a garden that combines beauty with robustness, and demonstrated it through our designs, he was pleasantly surprised and said: "Go ahead and get started."'

In Barneveld, Kroeze used Adezz corten steel walls to close off sightlines. In other gardens, he often uses corten steel walls to extend sightlines, but here they serve to hide the swimming pool from view. 'They are 80 cm high. Next to them is a border with diamond grass and lavender. The edging is made of corten steel and gives the whole area a neat finish. These Adezz barriers are only 2 to 3 mm thick and look much more refined than concrete edges, which are 5 to 6 cm thick. The corten steel edging gives the garden a touch of class.'

Steengoed! hoveniers also used white polyester planters from Adezz. 'Especially with the spotlights installed on them, they add a beautiful accent to the garden.' The landscaping company planted multi-stemmed Osmanthus, also known in the Netherlands as mock holly. The stairs immediately catch the eye in the garden. Some of these were made from corten steel materials from Adezz. 'We did something special here: we used corten steel planters as stair elements. We filled them with cobblestones and also gres. It was an idea from our owner, Nico Visser, who has a lot of experience with construction projects. Thanks to Adezz's custom-made options, this idea could be implemented more easily.' We often order products in standard sizes but frequently use the custom-made options as well. We are glad that this option is available.'

Kroeze started working at Steengoed! hoveniers about five years ago. Before that, he had already been designing gardens for many years, both by hand and on the computer. Steengoed! hoveniers has been in business for 25 years and specializes in luxury gardens. 'But we also design and build small gardens. These large projects are the icing on the cake for us; we worked on this garden for about half a year. Our service area is mainly Harderwijk and surrounding towns like Ermelo and Zeewolde. Villa Resort Harderwold, where we design and maintain many gardens, lies across the water at the same latitude as Harderwijk. Buying a home in a villa resort became attractive during the COVID period when vacationing was difficult due to restrictions. A second home provided a vacation option. While the pandemic was a difficult time for many, landscaping companies did very well. We also experienced tremendous growth. Because people spent more time at home, they invested more in their own gardens.'
