Clear design lines bring structure to the whole

Tuinstudio Tom has created a green front garden that, according to designer Tom Poppelaars, offers surprises in every season. Half of the planting, supplied by Kwekerij & Plantencentrum Schonenberg, consists of native species. The zinc edging was supplied by Adezz, and soil improvement was carried out by Den Ouden Groep.

Tuinstudio Tom designed a closed composition, resulting in a garden that requires minimal maintenance, according to Poppelaars. The designer explains that there is something interesting to see in the garden during every season. "The clear lines from the design are reflected in the walls and hedges. Combined with the variation in paving materials, these lines provide structure to the entire garden," says Poppelaars.

Planting includes 50% native species

Materials

Materials include repurposed beams from the lignite mines in Limburg, copper slag cobblestones, and clay pavers. Olivine gravel has also been used, which binds CO₂ and therefore helps reduce greenhouse gases. The plant selection includes Aesculus mutabilis 'Penduliflora', a dwarf horse chestnut with distinctive flower colouring, which also helps keep the south façade cooler in summer. Other key plants featured in the design include Artemisia, Sporobolus, Salvia, Malva, Pulsatilla, and Galanthus.
