By connecting a garden in Nederweert with the interior of the home, Van der Asdonk Hoveniers has created an optimal indoor-outdoor living experience. This is the view of the clients, who are pleased with the overall result delivered by the contractor, from design to completion. The garden includes Adezz planters, ceramic tiles, and a multi-stemmed Pinus. The design was created by landscape designer Priscilla van der Asdonk, wife of Joost van der Asdonk, the new owner of the landscaping company.

A quarter-century of craftsmanship

Twenty-five years ago, Johan van der Asdonk founded Van der Asdonk Hoveniers. What started as a small business with a few employees has grown into a full-service landscaping company with a team of twelve professionals. "Everything depends on our team of skilled craftsmen," says Joost van der Asdonk. "Many people still associate gardeners with weeding and trimming, but it's a highly underestimated profession. To create beautiful gardens and maintain them, you need a broad knowledge base. We hear this from our clients after every project. We're very proud of our entire team."

Johan officially handed over the company to his son Joost

A new generation takes over

The 25th anniversary proved to be the ideal moment for a generational transition. On January 1, Johan officially handed over the company to his son Joost, though Johan, described as a "true plant enthusiast," remains actively involved in various garden projects. Joost has already worked in the landscaping business for 15 years, initially focusing on installation work and, in recent years, more on project planning and cost estimation.

'Everything has to be right from the start,' Joost explains. 'If the preparation isn't correct, the execution on-site won't run smoothly either. This new role gives me great satisfaction.' According to Joost, the company's strength has always been its customer service. 'Two years ago, during the pandemic, we noticed how much clients appreciated our approach. Even under pressure, we remained accessible and approachable. People simply want to be heard. If something doesn't go as planned, we are honest and work towards a realistic solution. Our goal is always a perfect result.'

Special requests

Van der Asdonk Hoveniers focuses primarily on clients seeking something unique. 'Clients who don't want a standard garden filled with paving stones and wall blocks,' Joost explains. 'We prioritise quality and ensure every detail is perfect. Of course, that comes with a price tag — something not all clients realise or are prepared for. When a budget is limited, we offer alternative plans. This is also part of our service. Sometimes clients are so enthusiastic about the plan that they decide to double their initial budget. The client's wishes are always central; we never impose anything.'

Practical planters

For this project in Nederweert, landscape designer Priscilla van der Asdonk carefully listened to the client's wishes and translated them into a complete design. 'The details make the garden stand out from the average design,' says Joost. 'For example, the corten steel edging along the raised terrace continues at the raised entrance. The steelwork was custom-made by our regular supplier. The Adezz planters are a practical solution to quickly and easily fill corners of the garden. Adezz is highly active in developing new products and can also deliver custom work, which makes them a valuable partner for us.'

The benefits of artificial grass

Ease of maintenance and the common desire for a low-maintenance garden led to the choice of artificial grass from Royal Grass, a long-standing supplier to Van der Asdonk. 'If you have small shaded areas in your garden, as is the case here, I understand why people opt for this artificial grass, which is virtually indistinguishable from real grass,' says Joost. 'It's becoming increasingly difficult to keep natural grass looking good.'
The planting plan was created by employee Maarten, whom Van der Asdonk describes as a 'walking plant encyclopedia.' 'He creates new combinations for each garden, which our clients see as real added value. In this garden, alongside the multi-stemmed Pinus, several evergreen species ensure year-round interest. The evergreen oak adds a Mediterranean touch. The result is a garden that remains relatively low-maintenance.'
