Aluminum Planters Available in Any Color

Joost van der Asdonk, a landscaper from Meijel (Limburg), enjoys using not only corten steel but also aluminum planters in his garden projects. "The advantage of aluminum is that I can order these planters from Adezz in any RAL color," he explains. "I'm not limited to the typical corten steel color. If a client wants planters to match their window frames, I can provide them. Clients often want colors to coordinate in order to create a unified look." Joost took over the family business from his father in 2023.

Johan van der Asdonk founded Van der Asdonk Hoveniers 25 years ago. In 2023, the family marked the company's 25th anniversary by handing the business over to Joost, who had already been active in the company for over 15 years. He began with garden construction but increasingly focused on preparation and project planning. "Everything must be correct in the preparation stage; otherwise, things won't run smoothly on-site," says Joost. 'I find this new role very fulfilling. Everything depends on our team of skilled professionals. Many people still associate landscaping with simple weeding, but it's a much more complex and underestimated trade. Designing and maintaining beautiful gardens requires extensive knowledge across multiple fields. Fortunately, we often hear from satisfied clients after each project. We're proud of our team.'
Joost's wife, Priscilla, is a landscape designer and handles the design work. 'Joost usually visits the clients first and handles the initial preparations. Once a proposal is in place, I develop it further as the designer,' she explains.

Focusing on Unique Garden Designs

Van der Asdonk Hoveniers primarily serves clients seeking something unique. 'We target clients who don't want a standard garden filled with pavers and wall blocks. Quality is our top priority, and every detail must be just right,' says Joost. 'Naturally, that level of quality comes with a price tag. If a client's budget is limited, we offer an alternative plan. On occasion, clients have been so enthusiastic about our designs that they decided to double their budget. The client's wishes always come first—we never push our own ideas unnecessarily.'
Van der Asdonk is recognized as a certified "garden expert" for De Tuinen van Appeltern, which serves as a quality mark for clients. 'You don't earn that title by designing the standard gardens you see everywhere. It shows clients that they can expect something special.'

Breaking Straight Lines with Curves

Joost frequently uses Adezz planters and retaining walls to break up or emphasize straight lines in garden layouts. 'In this backyard in Meijel, we softened the linear design with round planters and gently curving retaining walls for the planting beds,' he explains. 'Some clients come to us with clear ideas, but most need guidance. Rarely do clients present fully developed designs, though they often bring photos of gardens or elements they find inspiring.'
In a recent project in Herten (Roermond), a private client selected square polyester planters measuring two by two meters. 'These fit well within the design's linear layout. We chose the RAL color 'traffic white.' The planters contain trees, which usually require planters without bottoms to allow sufficient root space,' Priscilla adds.

Color as a Unifying Element

'Clients often want planters in the same RAL color as their window frames or brick walls. With aluminum planters, this is no problem,' Priscilla says. 'For example, if they want a red planter to match their brickwork, we can accommodate that. The range from Adezz is extensive, with round, square, and rectangular options.' Joost notes that while corten steel planters remain popular, he appreciates not being limited to that color: 'Clients want consistency in their garden's color scheme.'
In Heythuysen, between Roermond and Weert, a client selected four aluminum planters in a RAL color matching their window frames—anthracite gray. The long, rectangular planters interrupt the garden's linear layout, combining clean lines with organic forms to add variation. 'Some of the planters are positioned at the back of the house, while others are placed along the sides,' explains Joost.

Plug-and-Play

In addition to planters, Joost often incorporates water features into his designs. 'Adezz offers a surprisingly wide range of these as well. They're easy and enjoyable additions, and everything is plug-and-play—the pump and lighting are pre-installed. We've been working with Adezz for about ten years. Nothing changed after I officially took over the business in 2023. What I particularly appreciate is that Adezz is innovative: they continuously improve existing products and introduce new ones, like decorative corten steel panels with various themes such as 'abstract' or 'nature.' These panels can be used as recurring design elements in the garden.'
Priscilla adds: 'In recent years, I've incorporated these decorative panels more frequently into my designs. It's a relatively new product from Adezz that can, for example, divide a garden into separate zones.'

Primarily Serving Private Clients

'We've occasionally used Adezz mailboxes too, but the planters remain our best-sellers. Most of our projects are for private clients, though we also work for businesses and municipalities. The majority of our work is within a 25-kilometer radius of our location in Meijel, between Weert, Roermond, and Venlo,' Joost explains.
'During the pandemic, the number of requests skyrocketed as people focused more on their homes and gardens. It was almost impossible to keep up with the demand. That was a real peak period. Things have now returned to normal, and we manage our projects with a team of ten people.'
