Van Ooijen's Hoveniers Originated from the Model Gardens at Appeltern

Rik de Jong, owner of Dutch Quality Gardens Van Ooijen's Hoveniers, enthusiastically describes a recent project near a country estate in Nuland (municipality of 's-Hertogenbosch), which features planters, retaining walls, and plant bowls from Adezz. 'This spacious garden is characterized by a sleek, modern design around the house, which gradually transitions into more organic forms. The planting helps soften the rigid lines of the layout.'

The property owners are long-time clients of Dutch Quality Gardens Van Ooijen's Hoveniers. The home's facades were recently whitewashed, and the woodwork was repainted, giving the house a more modern look. 'The paving near the house had been partially removed to allow for the facade work. The client approached me to restore the paving,' says De Jong. 'I suggested it might also be a good opportunity to modernize the garden area directly surrounding the house, which still had a fairly traditional layout with boxwood-edged rose beds. The boxwoods were also suffering from well-known problems. The client responded very positively to the 3D design we presented.' Work on the redesign began in early 2024.

'In the renders, we proposed raised borders using retaining walls, shown both in corten steel and in a color matching the window frames and doors. The client preferred the latter. That was easily arranged, since Adezz supplies retaining walls not only in corten steel but also in powder-coated aluminum, which can be produced in any desired color.' The chosen color was taupe, a grey-brown shade. The borders were planted with Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna', Nepeta faassenii 'Senior', Allium 'Millennium', Sesleria autumnalis, Limonium gmelinnii 'Dazzle Rocks', and Calamintha nepeta.

The color of the Adezz retaining walls matches that of the window frames and doors of the country house.

Planters on Pedestals for a Bold Look

'The plant bowls on pedestals near the pool give the backyard a bold appearance,' says De Jong. 'We often install these Adezz bowls on pedestals. Around the pool, everything was made a bit sleeker to create a more modern look, while the back of the garden remains more organic and rural in style. We kept the balance between planting and hardscaping the same as before. When deciding where to place paving, we focus on where it's functionally necessary: where people walk and where seating areas are located.'
According to De Jong, maintaining the right balance is key: 'At Van Ooijen's Hoveniers, we always strive for a good proportion between hardscape and planting. When we renovated this garden twelve years ago, we installed wooden planters from Adezz. These were originally brown, but over time, they have weathered beautifully to a natural grey. The new planters will do the same.'

Reliable Supplier

'We often choose products from Adezz because of the good price-to-quality ratio and the ability to order custom-made items,' explains De Jong. 'Adezz has an excellent webshop where I can easily select the desired products. Alongside a large collection of standard-sized products, custom orders are also possible.' After entering the dimensions, pricing appears instantly. 'For standard products, stock levels and delivery times are immediately visible. Custom orders take a bit longer, which is understandable.'
De Jong first encountered Adezz at trade fairs, where the company initially stood out for its wooden planters, then operating under the name Potmaat. Since then, Adezz has significantly expanded its in-house production and product range. 'In addition to planters, they now produce water tables, pond basins, retaining walls, edging systems, and various other garden furnishings,' he says.

Creative Approach

The landscaping company was founded 43 years ago by Ben van Ooijen. His model gardens eventually evolved into what is now known as Bloemenpark Appeltern. Van Ooijen's Hoveniers is part of the Dutch Quality Gardens collective, which includes eleven companies nationwide.
'I've been working at the company for 37 years,' says De Jong. 'I started with planting work and later combined this with office tasks, allowing Ben to focus on developing the model gardens. In 2006, I became co-owner, and now I am the sole owner. We complete and maintain our projects with a team of about 20 employees, a stable number over the past decade. Although we work nationwide, most of our clients are within about 35 kilometers of Appeltern. However, if clients move elsewhere in the country, they often prefer to stay with us, so we occasionally travel further.'

Most new clients are referred by previous customers: 'We mainly operate in the mid to high-end market segment. That's something you grow into. The gardens don't necessarily have to be large — we enjoy the challenge of meeting client wishes even on smaller plots. But if you want a fully paved garden, you're in the wrong place with us. We want to bring creativity into our designs,' says De Jong with a smile.

Tailored, Not Repetitive

'Our designs are defined by lush planting, ranging from neatly pruned elements to vibrant, colorful borders. Each design is customized to suit the client's wishes. Everything is bespoke; nothing is standard,' emphasizes De Jong. 'We avoid replicating the same ideas in every project. Sometimes the design is more geometric, other times more organic. Often, we incorporate the surrounding landscape to blend the garden into its environment, as we did here at this country house near Nuland.'
