Broad support for a nature-inclusive living environment
During de eerste Natuurinclusief Manifestatie 54 companies, organisations and social initiatives signed the manifesto 'Groen wonen, bewegen, spelen en ontmoeten in 13.000 buurten'. At the end of the event, the manifesto was symbolically handed over to a baby from Brabant, as a sign of investing in the next generation. The parties call on administrators to take green space and health as a fixed standard in the design of neighbourhoods.

The manifesto was drawn up within Collectief Natuurinclusief (health domain), with input from, among others, municipalities, Staatsbosbeheer and the GGD. Among the signatories are organisations such as IVN Natuureducatie, JOGG, Jantje Beton, Koninklijke VHG, Deltaplan Biodiversiteitsherstel and Ballast Nedam Development.

It is not only about more green space, but above all about better designed green space that is accessible, diverse and attractive.

More green space urgently needed in paved neighbourhoods
From onderzoek by Natuur & Milieu and Sweco it appears that in the 30 largest municipalities, more than half of the neighbourhoods are largely paved. This often means less than 75 m² of public green space per home, or the lack of a continuous green area of at least one hectare. According to the parties, the 13,000 Dutch neighbourhoods offer a major opportunity to bring health and nature closer to residents. 'More green in the living environment demonstrably delivers health benefits,' says Renske Visscher, domeinleider gezondheid at Collectief Natuurinclusief. 'Contact with nature reduces stress, improves concentration and sleep, and encourages moving around and meeting others. Green also protects against heat, air pollution and noise.' IVN Natuureducatie is one of the prominent partners and makes an active contribution to the domains gezondheid, onderwijs, bedrijventerreinen and vrijetijdseconomie.
Nature-inclusive design as the basis
The signatories promise to contribute, from their own role and expertise, to a green transition of neighbourhoods. This is not only about more green, but especially about better designed green that is accessible, diverse and attractive. 'When we put nature inclusivity at the centre from the design stage, area development changes from a cost item into adding value,' says Onno Dwars, CEO of Ballast Nedam Development. 'Green, healthy neighbourhoods deliver gains for health, biodiversity and climate.'

The manifesto contains six principles for nature-inclusive neighbourhoods, such as nature-inclusive design, making space for meeting and biodiversity, and working together in neighbourhood coalitions.

Green space and play reinforce each other
Jantje Beton also sees that green neighbourhoods deliver a lot. 'In our Gezonde Buurten programme it becomes clear that green space in combination with play and exercise is a golden combination,' says director Mascha van Werven. 'The positive effects of play and exercise come together with the cooling, water storage and relaxation that green provides.'
Manifest mentions six directions for action
The manifesto contains zes principes for nature-inclusive neighbourhoods, such as nature-inclusive design, making space for meeting and biodiversity, and working together in neighbourhood coalitions. It invites companies, governments and organisations to work together on neighbourhoods where people and nature benefit. Meer organisaties kunnen zich nog bij de beweging aansluiten.
