GreenMatter and VERHEES PRODUCTS join forces for circular solutions in public space

Circular ambitions in public space are gaining momentum thanks to Field Green, the new partnership between GreenMatter BV and VERHEES PRODUCTS. What started as a search for a circular solution for worn-out artificial turf has grown into a collaboration that helps municipalities and contractors make access to recycled turf products easier and more accessible. The result is a growing portfolio of outdoor furniture and custom products, with a clear vision towards 2030.

The issue of artificial turf waste is becoming increasingly urgent for municipalities and sports organisations. 'Managing artificial turf waste is a growing challenge and has been highlighted several times in the news,' says Kilian Peschel of GreenMatter. 'That pushed us to start innovating. We began with edge boards made from recycled turf around sports fields. Since then, we have developed a broad portfolio including posts, planks, bank protection, grass tiles, sports floors, outdoor furniture and more.'
GreenMatter focuses on providing practical solutions for municipalities and contractors, with circularity as a core principle. Peschel: 'Everyone aims for sustainability, but there is still a lot to gain. Traditional materials are still often chosen by default. Artificial turf waste originates in the sports sector, and we try to reuse it there as much as possible. But the volume is so large that it must also be applied outside the sports sector, in public space.'

A collaboration that works

The partnership with VERHEES PRODUCTS, a specialist in recycled plastics, was a logical next step. Rogier Biekens, director of VERHEES PRODUCTS: 'Reusing artificial turf was already part of our portfolio, but not yet a major component. GreenMatter received many targeted requests from the market. That fits well with our experience in plastic products. Technically, we hardly had to make adjustments; the material fits within our existing processes.'
The cooperation took shape after the summer. Peschel: 'Together we developed the new Field Green product line. We are increasingly working together on custom projects.'

Biekens adds: 'That first meeting over coffee at our company was enough. There was an immediate connection. Since then, we have made strong progress in a short time.' Field Green focuses on a wide range of outdoor furniture, from benches and picnic sets to tables and waste bins. The products are weather-resistant, splinter-free, low-maintenance and standard in green. The range will later expand with blue and other colours, as fields in those colours are replaced. Customisation remains an important pillar.

More than furniture: a flexible network

A key strength of the partnership lies in the network both companies bring. Peschel: 'VERHEES PRODUCTS can do much more than produce furniture. We refer clients for specific questions. Their workshop and short communication lines allow for quick action.'

Rogier Biekens: 'Because we work with a broad group of suppliers, we can create combinations that were not possible before'

Biekens: 'Because we work with a broad group of suppliers, we can create combinations that were not possible before. A base from supplier X combined with planks made from recycled artificial turf? No problem. That makes Field Green strong: we can serve a wide range of needs without being tied to a single product line.'
The first results of the collaboration are already visible. The municipality of Zeist recently purchased the first set of Field Green furniture. Another example is in Heemskerk, where VERHEES PRODUCTS replaced existing bench planks with recycled turf material.

Growing market, increasing requirements

The timing for Field Green appears favourable. Municipalities are increasingly held accountable for circular targets. Peschel: 'By 2030, municipalities are required to procure 50 percent circularly. That means half of every removed artificial turf field must return within the municipality. This can be in a 130-kilo picnic table, but also in larger custom projects. The closer we get to that deadline, the more opportunities arise, for us and for the entire recycling sector.'
Biekens sees the same trend: 'The market is increasingly asking for sustainable solutions. Sometimes we develop products that do not yet meet direct demand but do spark interest. Innovation is not always demand-driven; sometimes you need to show what is possible.'

Customisation as a driver

A significant part of the work involves custom solutions. Biekens: 'That is exactly where we are strong. GreenMatter was looking for a partner who can deliver that. Thanks to our experience and workshop, we can respond quickly to specific needs.'
This flexibility is essential when reusing artificial turf, as its structure and composition can vary per batch. 'That is why collaboration is so important,' says Peschel. 'You cannot achieve the goal of 50 percent circularity by 2030 alone. Suppliers, municipalities, contractors and sports facilities need to work together.'

Future outlook: a full-fledged public space brand

Field Green is rapidly developing into a recognised brand in public space. The ambition is clear: expand, refine and respond to the circular challenges facing the Netherlands. Biekens: 'We are working on new products that will soon be added to the range. It will become a strong portfolio. We listen closely to the market but also offer solutions customers may not have considered.'
Peschel sees the partnership as an example of how circularity can be accelerated: 'Combining our knowledge of artificial turf recycling with the production expertise of VERHEES PRODUCTS enables real impact. That is what matters.'
Field Green is therefore not just a new product line, but a collaboration that shows how essential cooperation is to turn a waste stream into a valuable and sustainable raw material stream.
