From measuring to knowing: practical trials should show what measuring equipment really says
On Tuesday 23 June, Yuverta Boxtel is again organising its midsummer evening for tree professionals. This practical meeting focuses on measuring equipment for tree safety. The format remains similar to previous years: a combination of in-depth content, practical trials and time to meet others, with a barbecue to start the evening.

The central question during the evening is what measuring equipment delivers in practice. Several tree-technical researchers will carry out measurements on five trees in advance. The results will be analysed and presented to the participants. This will be followed by a practical session on site, in which the outcomes are tested.
Confidence in measuring equipment
Guest lecturer Herman Wevers of Alles over Groenbeheer will lead the content programme. According to him, the focus is on understanding the reliability of measurements. 'We want to know what this equipment is worth,' he explains. 'Can you rely on it, or does it remain a tool to confirm your judgement?' The evening is explicitly interactive. Participants assess the situation in the field themselves and make predictions about how a tree will behave during a pulling test.
Current topic
Training coordinator Corik Geurts also sees the theme as topical. In arboriculture, various methods and tools are used to assess the condition and stability of trees. 'There is often discussion about how measurement data should be interpreted and what the advantages and disadvantages are of the various techniques,' says Geurts.
Going outside
After the presentation, participants will go outside. Four trees will be felled to check the measurement results. One tree will undergo a pulling test, with participants first estimating what will happen: will the tree break, and at what height? Or will the tree topple over with root ball and all? The midsummer evening is intended for former and current BTA and ETT students and other interested parties. In addition to knowledge sharing, there will be time for networking, including a barbecue at the start and drinks at the end of the programme.
