The European Parliament has given the green light to the new European regulation on new genomic techniques (NGTs). The new rules are intended to enable the use of techniques such as CRISPR-Cas within European plant breeding.

The new rules provide for a simplified approval process for plants developed using NGTs that could also have been obtained through conventional breeding. The regulation will enter into force twenty days after publication. The techniques are expected to become available for practical use from 2028 onwards.
Better resistance
According to supporters, NGTs offer opportunities to develop varieties more quickly that are better resistant to diseases, pests and the effects of climate change. They could also help reduce the use of crop protection products. For the tree nursery sector, these techniques may eventually create new opportunities for developing resilient tree and plant varieties. The exact impact on the sector will depend on the further implementation of the regulation.
Organic cultivation
The new regulation stipulates that NGTs may not be used in organic cultivation. In addition, arrangements regarding coexistence, transparency and traceability still need to be further developed. This is intended to safeguard freedom of choice for both growers and consumers.
