Practical examples help make gardens and streets more resilient to extreme weather
A climate-adaptive inspiration garden was officially opened in Maarssen on 1 July. The garden demonstrates how residents can adapt their gardens and immediate surroundings to more extreme weather, including heat, heavy rainfall and drought. The Province of Utrecht contributed €21,500 towards the construction of the garden.

Visitors can see examples of permeable paving, climate-resilient planting and other measures that help reduce heat stress, flooding and biodiversity loss. A sustainable inspiration trail provides practical tips for improving their own gardens or streets.

From tree pits to pergolas
The inspiration trail demonstrates, among other things, how a tree pit can be designed and how shade sails and pergolas can help reduce heat stress. Energy-saving measures, such as insulation, are also highlighted. The initiators hope this will encourage visitors to implement both small and larger climate-adaptive measures themselves.

Collaboration between multiple organisations
The climate-adaptive inspiration garden was developed by the educational centre MEC Maarssen, part of the Utrecht Region Environmental Service. The centre provides nature and environmental education for schools and residents of the municipality of Stichtse Vecht. In addition to the Province of Utrecht, the De Stichtse Rijnlanden Water Authority and the Municipality of Stichtse Vecht also contributed financially to the project.
Opening hours and information
MEC Maarssen is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. More information can be found here.
