Occupational exposure may increase ALS risk
Landscapers, green space professionals and others who work with plant protection products should keep their exposure as low as possible. An international study, led by researchers from the Robert-Sauvé Research Institute for Occupational Health and Safety in Montréal, shows that people who are exposed to herbicides and insecticides at work have a 61 to 71 percent higher risk of developing the neurological disease ALS. The link is strongest among men. The researchers stress that the study does not prove that pesticides cause ALS, but it does show a clear link between occupational exposure and the disease.

The use of chemical plant protection products has declined sharply in recent years, but they are still used in some parts of the green sector. Examples include tree nurseries, sports fields and situations where a specific exemption or authorisation applies. For professionals who work with these products, it is important to understand the possible health risks.
Analysis of dozens of studies
The researchers analysed the results of dozens of previous studies on the link between pesticides and ALS. Together, these studies included thousands of participants. The analysis shows that people who are exposed to herbicides and insecticides at work have a clearly higher risk of developing ALS than people without such exposure. Among men, the risk was approximately twice as high.
No proven causal link
The researchers point out that these are observational studies. This means that a link can be identified, but it cannot be proven that pesticides actually cause the disease. Other factors may also play a role. However, the researchers consider the evidence strong enough to take occupational exposure to pesticides seriously as an important risk factor. They therefore call for more research into specific active substances and ways to further reduce workers' exposure.
Safe working remains important
For landscapers and green space professionals, the study does not change the existing rules for working safely with plant protection products. According to the researchers, however, the findings confirm the importance of keeping exposure as low as possible. This includes using the correct personal protective equipment, following the instructions for use and only applying products where their use is permitted.
