LTO urges tree nurseries to be extra vigilant when importing host plants
The bacterium Xylella fastidiosa has been detected at three vineyards in Luxembourg. This is an important quarantine pest in the European Union and poses a serious risk to the tree nursery sector. LTO Trees, Perennials and Summer Flowers is urging growers to be extra vigilant when importing host plants.
The infected vineyards are located in the Luxembourg municipalities of Mertert and Grevenmacher. In the affected areas, covering a total of 2.35 hectares, infected and potentially infected plants are being removed and destroyed. Plants of the same species are also being removed, even if they show no symptoms. The origin of the bacterium remains unknown.
Major consequences for the tree nursery sector
Xylella fastidiosa is a quarantine pest within the European Union. The bacterium attacks the vascular system of plants, disrupting water transport. As a result, plants may dry out and eventually die. The bacterium spreads through insects that feed on plant sap and through the movement of infected plants. There is currently no treatment available against the bacterium.
