New GravaTop surface aims to make walking and running paths smooth and comfortable again

Several walking and running paths in Park Luna in Heerhugowaard are receiving a new top layer. Commissioned by the Geestmerambacht recreational authority, Licht Bergen BV is applying GravaTop, a semi-paved surface that was introduced to the market in 2025 as an alternative to products containing steel slag.

The existing paths had become worn, rough and uneven in several places. This made them less comfortable for walkers and runners. Licht Bergen BV, which specialises in installing semi-paved surfaces, is therefore not only replacing the top layer, but first restoring the profile of the existing base.

Getting the base right first

The edges of the existing paths were cleared beforehand. Overgrown edges were cut back, removed and disposed of. The existing surface was then milled and reprofiled. Where necessary, 0/22 recycled aggregate is added.
The verges are also included in the work. They are milled, after which the soil is placed alongside the path ready for use. Once the new semi-paved surface has been applied, the verges can be finished immediately with this material. This prevents heavy machinery from having to drive over the fresh top layer and gives it time to harden.

Water needed for binding

The new top layer consists of 6 centimetres of yellow GravaTop Eco 0/11. According to developer JP Infra-Advies, the material consists of natural aggregates, including dolomite chippings, with a circular construction material used as a binder. 'No steel slag is used. The semi-paved surface is water-permeable and intended for applications including walking and cycling paths and other uses in public spaces,' says director Jos Put.

Water is needed after installation to activate the binding process of the semi-paved surface

'Water plays an important role during installation. If no rain is expected after installation, the new layer must therefore be wetted. At high temperatures, it is also important to keep the top layer sufficiently moist. Licht Bergen BV has built its own spraying and wiping trailer for this purpose, allowing water to be applied precisely during the work.'

The work in Park Luna also shows that when choosing a semi-paved surface, the material itself is not the only factor that matters. Preparation of the base, installation and conditions during curing ultimately determine the result as well.

New alternative for semi-paved surfaces

GravaTop was developed by JP Infra-Advies in 2025. The product is marketed as an alternative to semi-paved surfaces containing steel slag. According to the supplier, the combination of aggregates and binder creates a stable, water-permeable surface.
